Introduction

The Masherbrum Mountains, a sub-range of the Karakoram range, have this summit as their highest point. It is accessible through the picturesque Hushe Valley and is located south of the well-known Baltoro Glacier.

"Masherbrum" is the native Balti name for "Queen of Peaks," while "Mahasherbaram" is the Indian word for "The White Tiger." Since it was the first peak in the range to be documented, it was given the designation "K1" during the first British survey of the Karakoram range in 1856.

Even seasoned climbers consider Masherbrum to be a very challenging and intricate climb. The difficult southeast face route was first successfully scaled by an American-Pakistani expedition team in 1960. One of the biggest unclimbed challenges in alpinism is still the mountain's northeast face.

Particularly from the Hushe Valley and the approach to its base camp, where the mountain's characteristic pyramid shape dominates the landscape, the peak offers breathtaking, dramatic vistas.
