Introduction

At an astounding 8,611 meters, K2, also called Chogori, is the second-highest peak in the world. It is proud to be Pakistan's tallest summit. K2 is located in the Karakoram Range and crosses the border between the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Xinjiang, China, and the Baltistan region of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

With the help of 500 porters and six scientists, a group of eleven brave mountaineers accomplished the historic feat of climbing K2 in 1954.

"K2" has important connotations. The letter "K" indicates that it belongs to the Karakoram Range, while the number "2" indicates that it is the second-highest peak in the globe. Since surveyor T.G. Montgomery gave it the designation "K2" in 1856, it has gained widespread recognition. However, the Balti people who live in Skardu and the surrounding area call this enormous peak "Ketu."
An Italian team confirmed K2's astounding height of 8,611 meters during a summit attempt in 1954. Lacedelli and Compagnoni, who reached the peak of K2 with ample of oxygen, subsequently verified this measurement. The tales and mysteries surrounding K2 were largely debunked by the well-known mountaineer Walter Bonatti. His detailed descriptions, which are recorded in "The Mountains of My Life" and the brief "Trial on K2," provide insight into the actual characteristics of this difficult peak.
