One of Karakoram's most daring and breathtaking trekking routes is the K2 base camp via Gondoro La Trek. Outside of the polar region, it provides a breathtaking view of the longest glaciers and tallest mountains.
The main entry points to the snow-covered 8,000-meter (26,000-foot) summits, such as K2, the Gasherbrums, Broad Peak, and the Trango Towers, as well as the massive glaciers of Baltoro, Biafo, and Trango, are the nearby Askole and Hushe, which are reachable by road from Skardu. Since Skardu is today the region's top tourist and mountaineering destination, a sizable tourism infrastructure, including hotels and retail establishments, has sprung up around it.
Many climbers consider the mountain scenery in this area to be among the best in the world. K2 Base Camp, which offers northeastern views, is reached by the Gondogoro La Trek.
